weak. China's "economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature," said
John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn't expect huge stimulus to be announced during next
week's Central Economic Work Conference, as "Beijing's largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins." Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals
for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing's near-term policy
intentions, likely will not be officially announced
until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump's first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against
the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

During a new video about the making of the film the A Star is Born actress, 38, talks about how fascinated she was by the world created
for the 2019 film Joker.
'It was a very special experience,' she told People in the clip.

Folie À Deux made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival

Dec 6 (Reuters) - Outside the Yara cinema in Cuba's
capital, workers on Friday prepared for screening of
the first TV adaptation of one of Latin America's most beloved novels,
a mammoth challenge taken on by streaming giant Netflix and
filmed entirely in Colombia.
The first two chapters of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" - a 16-episode series split in two parts -
will be presented at the Havana film festival on the Caribbean island
nation where residents are blocked from accessing Netflix among other U.S.
websites.
The show adapts Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1967 classic that chronicles seven generations of the Buendia family - many of whose members
share the same names - in the fictional town of Macondo.
It is considered one of the most important works of magical realism - a style pioneered in Latin America
blending realism with the fantastic - and a key product
of the experimental and political literary movement known as the Latin American Boom.
Director Alex Garcia Lopez, who co-helmed Part 1 alongside
Laura Mora, told Reuters that when he read the novel in his 20s he was blown away by its ability to simultaneously
tell the story of a country, a continent and the human race.
For him, at the heart of the story is whether human beings can "beat our destiny, or if we are programmed to keep making the same mistakes generation after generation."
"This is very human," he said, pointing to the book's parallels to growing political polarization in the United States and Europe.
"The book captured that in 1967 and it remains extremely important today."
Promotional videos show exquisite 19th-century costumes and lush tropical scenery from Colombia's
Caribbean coast.
Garcia Marquez, who died in 2014, had been reluctant to sell the rights
for a Hollywood-esque adaptation of his novel.
Netflix's Latin American content vice president, Francisco Ramos, told Reuters, however, that the agreement with Garcia Marquez's sons had
been "very straightforward," as Netflix committed early on to produce the show entirely in Colombia, in Spanish,
and to use the series format to translate the novel's immense
hundred-year scope.
The series credits the authors' two sons as
executive producers.
"Adapting a masterpiece is a huge challenge," Ramos said.
"We never had any doubt the enormous talent from Latin America - in this case mostly from Colombia - would be up to the task. They just needed the support and opportunity."
Ramos said Netflix, which recently released a film adaptation of Juan Rulfo's 1955 Mexican classic "Pedro Paramo," is
now working on adaptations of works from Mexican writers Jorge Ibarguengoitia and Angeles Mastretta as well as from Colombia's Laura Restrepo.
Netflix ranks crime dramas set around Latin America such as
"Narcos" and "Griselda" as some of its most popular series.
"We almost always export these stories of drug traffickers, illegal immigrants, prostitution, poverty and dictatorships," Garcia Lopez noted.

AMMAN/BEIRUT/CAIRO, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Syrian rebels announced on state television on Sunday that they have
ousted President Bashar al-Assad, eliminating a 50-year family dynasty in a lightning offensive that raised
fears of a new wave of instability in a Middle East gripped by war.
Syria's army command notified officers on Sunday that
Assad's regime had ended, a Syrian officer who was informed of the move told Reuters.
But the Syrian army later said it was continuing operations against "terrorist groups" in the key cities of
Hama and Homs and in Deraa countryside.
Assad, who had crushed all forms of dissent, flew out of Damascus for an unknown destination earlier on Sunday,
two senior army officers told Reuters, as rebels said they had
entered the capital with no sign of army
deployments.
"We celebrate with the Syrian people the news of freeing our prisoners and releasing their chains and announcing the end of the era of injustice in Sednaya prison," the rebels said, referring to
a large military prison on the outskirts of Damascus where the Syrian government detained thousands.
Thousands in cars and on foot congregated at a main square in Damascus waving and chanting "Freedom" from a half century
of Assad family rule, witnesses said.
The dramatic collapse also marks a seismic
moment for the Middle East, dealing a massive blow to
Russia and Iran, which have lost a key ally at the heart of the region and creating more uncertainty as
the Gaza war rages.
The pace of events has stunned Arab capitals and raised fears
of a new wave of regional instability.
It marks a turning point for Syria, shattered by more than 13
years of war which has turned cities to rubble, killed hundreds of thousands of people, and forced millions
abroad as refugees.
Stabilising western areas of Syria captured in the
rebels' advance will be key. Western governments,
which have shunned the Assad-led state for years, must decide how to deal with
a new administration in which a globally designated terrorist group -
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) - looks set to have influence.
HTS, which spearheaded the rebel advances across western Syria,
was formerly an al Qaeda affiliate known as the Nusra Front until its leader Abu
Mohammed al-Golani, severed ties with the global jihadist movement in 2016.
"The real question is how orderly will this transition be, and it seems quite clear that Golani is very eager for it to be an orderly one," said Joshua Landis, a Syria expert and Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma.
Golani will not want a repeat of the chaos that swept Iraq after U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.
"They are going to have to rebuild ... they will need Europe and the U.S. to lift sanctions,"
Landis said.
HTS is Syria's strongest rebel group and some Syrians remain fearful
it will impose draconian Islamist rule or instigate
reprisals.
A Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by rebels,
according to data from the Flightradar website.
The aircraft initially flew towards Syria's coastal region, a
stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before
disappearing off the map.
Reuters could not immediately ascertain who was on board.
Two Syrian sources said there was a very high probability that Assad
may have been killed in a plane crash as it was a mystery why the plane took a surprise U turn and disappeared off the map according to data from the Flightradar website.
"It disappeared off the radar, possibly the transponder was switched off, but I believe the bigger probability is that the aircraft was taken down...," said
one Syrian source without elaborating.
As Syrians expressed joy, Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said the country should
have free elections so Syrians can choose who they want.
But that would require a smooth transition in a country with complex competing interests,
from Islamists to groups with links to the United States, Russia and
Turkey.
Jalali also said he had been in contact with rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani to discuss
managing the current transitional period, marking a notable development in efforts to shape Syria's political future.
Jordan affirmed on Sunday the importance of preserving the stability and security
of Syria, the state news agency reported.
U.S. President Joe Biden and his team were monitoring
the "extraordinary events in Syria" and were in touch with regional partners,
the White House said.
Syria's civil war, which erupted in 2011 as an uprising against Assad's
rule, dragged in big outside powers, created space for jihadist militants to plot attacks around the
world and sent millions of refugees into neighbouring states.
The frontlines of Syria's complex civil war were dormant for years.
Then Islamists once affiliated with Al Qaeda suddenly burst into action, posing the biggest challenge to Assad, who had survived years of gruelling war and international isolation with the help of Russia, Iran and
Lebanon's Hezbollah.
But Assad's allies were focussed on and weakened by other crises, leaving Assad at the mercy of
his opponents with an army that was not prepared to defend him.
Israel, which has severely weakened the Iran-backed groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, will likely celebrate the fall of Assad, another of Iran's key regional
allies. But the prospects of an Islamist group ruling Syria will likely raise concerns.
Thousands of Homs residents poured onto the streets after the army withdrew from the central city,
dancing and chanting "Assad is gone, Homs is free" and "Long live Syria and down with Bashar al-Assad".
Rebels fired into the air in celebration, and youths tore down posters
of the Syrian president, whose territorial control
has collapsed in a dizzying week-long retreat by the military.
The fall of Homs gave the insurgents control over Syria's strategic heartland and a key highway crossroads, severing
Damascus from the coastal region that is the stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect
and where his Russian allies have a naval base and air base.
Homs' capture is also a powerful symbol of the rebel movement's dramatic comeback.
Swathes of Homs were destroyed by gruelling siege warfare between the rebels and
the army years ago. The fighting ground
down the insurgents, who were forced out.
Rebels freed thousands of detainees from the city prison. Security forces left in haste after
burning their documents.
The head of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces Mazloum Abdi said on Sunday on X: "We are witnessing historic moments in Syria as the authoritarian regime in Damascus falls. This change presents an opportunity to build a new Syria founded on democracy and justice, ensuring the rights of all Syrians."

WWHL host Andy Cohen fired questions at the Ibiza star,
asking her if she thinks Raquel Leviss actually thought she had chemistry with Tom Schwartz.
Gillian said no. She also revealed that she's a VPR viewer and
appreciates all the context the newest episodes have given to
the off screen drama that's been dominating pop culture news since March
3.
And when it comes to who she blames more for the affair between Raquel and
Tom Sandoval, she agreed with the most of the rest of the world and said,
'Sandoval.'
But Lala brought up a good point, saying the blame is on both of their shoulders since Raquel was best friends with
Sandoval's girlfriend of nearly a decade, Ariana Madix.
When Cohen asked the Fear Street actress if she thought Raquel and Sandoval would last, she screwed up her face in disgust and said, 'Um, no.'
Currently, Gillian is playing Mary Jayne Gold, a real-life Chicago heiress who worked to rescue European Jews, intellectuals, and artists, during World War II in Transatlantic on Netflix.
'I think that she felt compelled to help in any way that she could,' she said of her character in an interview with Town and Country.
'Certainly in our version of the telling of it, initially, what she feels like she has to
offer is her money, her wealth.'

you want your character to be living in the present.'

some degree.'

Earlier this year, the Pittsburgh native debuted the Seven Faces of Jane,
an anthology comprised of eight short films all starring the actress as the main character.
The anthology has eight different directors, including Jacobs
along with Ken Jeong, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Alexandra
Cassavetes, Boma Iluma, Julian Acosta and Alex Takacs.
The cast includes the likes of Emanuela Postacchini,
Anthony Skordi, Leticia LaBelle, Benjamin Hjelm, Chido Nwokocha,
Sybil Azur, Daniela Hernandez, Joel McHale, Caroline Ducrocq, Breeda Wool, Soledad St.
Hilaire, Joni Reiss and Paris Nicole.
The film premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival

'It was a very special experience,' she told People in the clip.
'I had never seen a world created like that before.'
Gaga - born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta - plays Lee, a version of Harley Quinn, in the upcoming film.
'She easily slipped into that world. It's not like she's
trying to be Harley Quinn from the comic books; she's

Gaga added of her performance: 'It brought out all of that rough
and tough energy and how big these dreams were, and how far they
would fall.'
Folie À Deux made its world premiere at the Venice Film

Londonderry House, like many of London's great houses, was built for entertaining.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, most aristocrats and others who lived on their estates for much of the year had a
town house to which they migrated for ‘the Season' - those
summer months filled with balls and parties, when débutantes were presented at court and launched into ‘society' in the hope of making a splendid
marriage.
The ballroom, Devonshire House
These houses were as magnificent as their owners could manage.
Built and decorated by the most talented of the age, they were
sumptuously furnished - walls were hung with silk, damask and wonderful paintings
- and often embellished with marble statuary. The mustard-yellow drawing rooms
of Londonderry House were filled with blue Sèvres vases and gold plate; in the
entrance hall stood a Canova statue of Theseus and the
Minotaur (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum). Suites of rooms, with a ballroom at
one end, could be flung open for entertaining.
Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling - and threesomes
Today most of these palatial mansions have been pulled down or turned into blocks of flats.
With their disappearance went their furnishings, objets and paintings.
But what their wonderful rooms looked like can be seen in London:
Lost Interiors, a book compiled from superb black-and-white photographs of these amazing houses,
some of which belonged to aristocratic landowners, others
to plutocrats or society figures.
The drawing room, Grosvenor House
Most of the townhouses - those used for the Season rather than permanent residences - were clustered
round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly, like Devonshire House.
Here once lived the fifth Duke of Devonshire and his wife Georgiana (pronounced jaw-janer), whom he had married in 1774 when she was just 17.
She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became a leader of fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three feet high, decorated with birds,
fruit, even ships in sail. The couple spent 20
years in a ménage à trois with Lady Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana's close
friend, who was also the Duke's mistress. Meanwhile, Georgiana's
gambling led to mounting debts: on her death in 1806 they were
found to be the equivalent of £4 million in today's money.
The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster, AKA Bendor,
in his 20s
Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging
to the dukes of Westminster and one of the largest in London, as befitted the family's status and wealth (their huge fortune
came from their ownership of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond
and handsome second duke (1879-1953) was known as one of the richest men in England, lavishing
jewels on his mistresses, chief among whom was Coco Chanel.
The picture gallery, Grosvenor House
A restless soul, Bendor would arrive without warning at any of his
houses (or yachts). All were kept ready: cars fuelled,
silver polished, servants in livery. But after the First World War,
during which Grosvenor House had been requisitioned as a hospital, land prices had
risen so high that even for Bendor it had become uneconomic and he sold it.
It was demolished in 1927 and the Grosvenor House Hotel was built on the site.

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton from 1940 to 1975.
Superbly furnished by this brilliant photographer,
it was described loftily by the diarist Chips Channon (for whom the word ‘snob' could have been invented - in his diaries he
declares, ‘I am only really happy with royalty') as ‘a tiny
but super-attractive snuffbox of a house'. Beaton, himself no social slouch, ran him close:
at his parties the women often wore stiletto heels, which pitted
the floor, and later he would point them out, saying, ‘That's Princess Marina, that's Julie Andrews, that's Vivien Leigh…'
French furnishings at 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton
Beaton's near neighbour in Pelham Place, until the mid-60s,
was the great stage designer Oliver Messel. When Messel's nephew Tony
Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon) became engaged to Princess Margaret, Messel laid on a lunch, asking the Princess if there was anyone
she would particularly like to meet. She said she had always greatly admired the witty cabaret star Bea Lillie and so Messel invited her.
What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a drinking habit.
At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and was carried upstairs to sleep it off.
Tony and the Princess took their leave and Messel rushed back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings for
Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted by a telephone call.

‘It's Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,' said the voice
at the other end. ‘We thought you ought to know that there's a naked woman on your balcony, throwing bottles
at everyone who passes by.'
Among the last of these fascinating residences to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry House.
Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls, hosted by
the Londonderrys for their four daughters and two granddaughters.
When eventually it had to go, in July 1962, a farewell party for
300 was given by Alastair, the 9th Marquess.
Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a swaggering young Mick Jagger, no less
- presaging the rise of a whole new swinging London generation.

to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a "casting couch" ploy to groom aspiring male
models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol
and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was
held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to
the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up
by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from
the US attorney's office for the eastern district
of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what
appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that
recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of "force, fraud and coercion" to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much larger and
have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and
Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released on half
a million dollars bond in October.
